how to overcome fear of being kidnapped
This is a very old article I wrote when I was in Year 7. It was on wikiHow, but I have no idea what has happened to it now. Read the original here. Right here.
When you see a 'Missing' poster anywhere, do you feel uneasy? Are you paranoid about being abducted by a stranger? And when you enter your inbox in your email, do you see chain mails about people being missing? Fear of being kidnapped is normal, and here is how you and others can overcome it.
Talk to others about your fear. When your worries are clogging up your mind, throw them out into the open. Chances are, people will give you great advice, and you can feel less worried. Scary dreams and ideas will disappear once you share them out loud to someone you really trust.
Despite seeing 'missing' stories from the media, understand that the chances of being abducted by a stranger are very, very rare.
If going somewhere alone makes you uncomfortable, don't go. Ask someone you trust to help you overcome your fear by going with you to the shops, for example. Tell them to get you to know some clerks or helpers they know. Search for public phones in the area.
Never go anywhere with anyone unless someone you trust knows where you are, who you're with and when you'll be home. It makes it much safer that way.
Chain mails about people being kidnapped are almost always untrue. People forwarding the scary mails can shrink your confidence. Don't let creepy emails boost your fear. Delete those emails.
Always tell someone you trust when you're in a situation that makes you uncomfortable and ask for help.
You have control in your own safety. Tell yourself that.
And more tips...
Imagine your fear is a huge rock. When you feel better and boost in your confidence, chip away at the rock of fear, and soon, your confidence will gain.
Take a self defense class if you still feel uncomfortable.
Don't be afraid to talk to someone you trust, for example a parent, friend, or someone else you know and fully trust.
